How does Author, Harloe Rae select her character names in Left for Wild?

This week Harloe Rae released her new book, Left for Wild. I am thrilled she took a moment to sit down with me to discuss her writing process and how her author friends bless her life and make her a better writer. Check out the interview below.

Harloe, I’m so excited about your book, Left for Wild. I’ve purchased my copy already and I’m digging into it.  I LOVE the survival tips – very clever. Let’s get started.

MS:  What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

HR: Writing is my second job. I still have a day job, so that impacts my ability to bust out words whenever the mood strikes. I wish I could say that my schedule is super smooth and efficient on a daily basis. That is definitely not the case. I release three books a year and tend to follow a pretty consistent schedule of writing each day for a few months, take a month off, and start the next book. When I’m on a deadline, I write each day and keep track of my word counts to keep myself accountable.

MS: What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

HR: I love this question because friends in this industry are so vital. I’ve been blessed with some incredible friendships and I feel extremely fortunate for that. K.k. Allen, Heather M. Orgeron, LK Farlow, Leigh Shen, Ava Harrison, Parker S. Huntington, AM Hargrove, Michelle Heard, Tia Louise, Ace Gray, Nicole French, and I could go on. They all know who they are! The greatest things these ladies do for me is to provide encouragement, advice, and inspiration. They’re all extremely talented and crazy amazing and incredibly selfless.

MS: What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

HR: This is another really great question. I’m going to go with The Unwanted Wife by Natasha Anders. Pretty sure a lot of people have read it, but they don’t love it on the level that I believe they should. That counts as under-appreciated, right? 🙂

MS: It absolutely does! Let’s talk more about your process. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

HR: Google is a good friend, right? I can sit on the internet doing searches or watching videos for hours. I tend to research prior to starting a novel, but also during the process depending on the scene. I find a lot of inspiration in pictures as well.

MS: You always have the greatest names for your characters. How do you select the names of your characters?

HR: Baby name websites are amazing!

MS: Wow, I can’t believe we are almost done. Tell us, what are the hardest scenes to write?

HR: I love the really intense, overly emotional scene, but they’re also very complex and take a lot more out of me to get typed out.

MS: Harloe, thank you so much for taking the time to connect with us here.  Do you have anything else you want to share? Where can readers find you to learn more about you and check out some of your other books?

Arrested. Wrongfully accused. Sentenced to ten years.
But the steel bars release me early.

After serving half of my time for a crime I didn’t commit, they grant me parole—with a very short leash. My second chance at freedom begins now, and I won’t waste it. I should’ve been paying more attention.

Ambushed. Captured. Stranded.
When I wake in the depths of a snowy forest, all seems lost. I’ve been left alone in the wilderness with zero means of escape. Until someone rouses beside me.

I recognize Blakely Cross instantly, yet she’s barely more than a stranger. Now she’s stuck with me in the worst place imaginable, as collateral damage.

Cope. Adapt. Persevere.
Blakely blames me, and rightfully so. This entire situation is my fault. Our destinies are inadvertently twisted together by efforts beyond our control. Because of my past, we’re being forced to depend on each other to stay alive.

The bond we’re building will overcome the harshest conditions.
But there are more unexpected challenges waiting for us.
